Uncle Ned’s Strange Words: irony
My next strange word is “irony”, that’s I-run-nee (think of what your nose might say to you the next time you catch a bad cold).
Irony takes us to strange places not just because to be ironic is to be, in some strange way, illogical. Good irony goes further. It defies logic by creating its own special logic. Logically, a successful real estate agent should easily sell her own house, but an ironic successful real estate agent’s house will linger on the market for months. Then she is at least successful with irony.
Uncle Ned will give you a sample sentence borrowed from his friend Doug:
“Irony is usually lost on the unironed.”
