Question: Why aren’t Cool Quotes more diverse?
Answer: Because we need more Charlies!
Actually, this question came up from one of our own when he noted that, almost every time he goes to coolquotes.org, it wouldn’t take him more than a few clicks through a conversation before up popped a response from Terry Pratchett. True, a certain Charlie started bingeing on the late Sir Terry sometime last year and he didn’t move on to reading someone else until he’d captured nearly a thousand Cool Quotes from that master of fantasy and satire. He has since meekly agreed to binge on more diverse sources, at least for awhile.
But in the process of researching this little bug a stark bias has been exposed among Cool Quotes captured thus far. As the collection approaches 7,000 entries, at least a quarter were authored by deceased Europeans, despite our best efforts over recent years at introducing more diversity, in particular since the pre-release of coolquotes.org went live the summer of 2025. Even among those most-quoted deceased Europeans, barely more than 2 percent are women! Not at all a surprising statistic, considering centuries of male bias, and yet not at all beyond remedy considering the rich diversity of coolness throughout the ages.
We have always seen many entries from a wide range of demographics. For example, Charlies recently captured items from a popular hispanic TikTok influencer and from a champion female pole vaulter. However, we’ll need to see much more than the three hundred-odd new entries we see per month before we’ll put much of a dent in that historical bias, not just for the sake of more diversity, but much more in the interest of a constantly more enriched experience of our Conversation Through the Ages.
