Question: Aren’t Cool Quotes often taken out of context?
Answer: Yes and no, maybe, sometimes, often.
The most common answer to this question is an emphatic yes. We are avid readers and listeners and daily we find amazing strings of words that we instantly want to capture for the cause. And of course, the instant they are pulled off the page, or out of a song, or copied down from a conversation, they are already out of context — sometimes even way out of context, and often renders those words, in our opinion, just that much more cool.
Context is constantly shifting, which is one thing which keeps life interesting, as well as sometimes downright scary. Probably the only Cool Quotes which might be entirely in context are the quotes about context:
We always take each other out of context. – Charlieism #215
It is context that has power. – Terry Pratchett, Unseen Academicals
There are more contexts than the one that we’re in — the one that we think is reality.
– Alan Kay
In the course of a long life one encounters all sorts of things which, taken from their context and seen through the eyes of a child, might well seem far more astonishing.
– Franz Kafka, Investigations of a Dog
Are we uncomfortable in the world because both we and the world lose our context?
– Brother Them
Every man is entitled to his context. – William F. Buckley Jr.
In the right context you can make words do all kinds of things.
– China Mieville, the last days of new paris
There is so much context to being human. – Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
Every silence needs a context. – Brother Them
That just might be the whole point of Cool Quotes: to give each of us a daily opportunity to find a new, perhaps more interesting, maybe even more fulfilling, and hopefully not too scary, context to explore.
