In the summer of 1944, South Dakota native brothers Harlan and Delbert Olson were stationed on the remote island of Attu at the far west of the Aleutian chain, just recently recaptured from the Empire of Japan.

Harlan married Edith in Seattle shortly before enlisting. Seattle was already home to extended family as many young folks made their way west for wartime jobs.

The very last picture from the family album is of Edith’s sister Alice.

Delbert married Florence in Seattle on his return from the Aleutians.
